Family beach holidays are amazing until someone gets sunburnt, stung, dehydrated, motion sick, or wakes up needing medicine you can't easily buy at the resort.
After multiple family beach holidays, we’ve learned that it’s usually the small forgotten items that become the biggest problems.
Whether you’re heading to Fiji, Bali, Thailand, Bahamas, Hawaii, or another tropical island destination, there are a few things we now never travel without. Because while most resorts have small convenience stores, they’re often expensive, limited, or missing exactly what you need when a child suddenly feels unwell. Most of these made our packing list after we forgot them once and ended up paying resort prices later.
So now we always pack a simple tropical beach holiday essentials kit before every trip, and it has saved us more than once.
Here’s exactly what we bring.

What we Always Pack for a Family Beach Holiday
Sun Protection & Skin Essentials
Hot weather, saltwater, pools, and long beach days can be rough on kids’ skin, especially in humid tropical climates. These are the items we use constantly on tropical holidays:
We always pack:
• Sudocrem for saltwater rash, chafing, and minor cuts and scrapes
Sun protection is one of those things we now take seriously on every holiday, not just tropical ones. We actually learned that the hard way after being completely unprepared for a snow day and very thankful to have aloe vera gel in the days afterwards.
Sudocrem somehow gets used on every beach holiday too, from chafing and saltwater rash to random scraped knees from slippery pool decks.
Mosquito, Jellyfish & Tropical Bite Essentials
Mosquitoes, marine stings, and skin irritation are probably some of the most common things families deal with on beach holidays.
We always pack:
• Antihistamines for bites or reactions
• Stingos for jellyfish or marine stings
• Hydrocortisone cream and Calamine lotion for itchy bites
Calamine lotion and antihistamines became absolute lifesavers after Henry and I got bitten by sea lice while snorkelling off a small island in Fiji.
Thankfully we had both with us, so we were able to get on top of the irritation quickly before it properly impacted the rest of the holiday.
Small First Aid Essentials
You don’t need an enormous medical kit, but having a few basics can save a lot of stress.
We always include:
• Bandaids
• Antiseptic wipes
• Betadine or Savlon
• Tweezers for splinters or spikes
Tweezers made the packing list permanently after Henry managed to get a sharp palm tree spike stuck in his foot while running around barefoot on holiday, something I honestly never would have thought to prepare for before travelling with kids. It turned out to be one of those tiny travel moments that’s much easier to deal with when you already have the right things on hand.
What to Pack for Tummy Bugs, Dehydration & Travel Sickness
Heat, travel, different food, long flights, and boat transfers can all affect kids differently.
These are the things we now never leave behind:
• Gastrolyte or electrolyte sachets
• Probiotics
• Anti-nausea tablets
Electrolyte sachets are probably one of the least exciting things on this list, but after long travel days, humid weather, and hours in the pool, they’ve genuinely helped us bounce back faster.
We originally packed motion sickness tablets “just in case,” but after a rough island transfer on a windy day, they quickly became one of those items we now always bring.
General Travel Medicine Essentials
These are the basics we always pack for both kids and adults:
• Paracetamol
• Nurofen
• Thermometer
• Eye drops for saltwater or chlorine irritation
Eye drops also earned a permanent place in our travel bag after a few huge water park days in Singapore left all of us with irritated chlorine eyes by the evening.
A thermometer is one of those things you hope you never use, but it’s reassuring to have when someone suddenly feels warm overnight.
The One Thing We’ve Learned About Beach Family Holidays
Packing for a tropical beach holiday with kids doesn’t need to be overwhelming, but having the right essentials can make family travel so much smoother.
This little kit has saved us from:
• Expensive resort shop prices
• Late-night pharmacy searches
• Uncomfortable flights and boat rides
• Stressed holiday moments
And now it’s something we automatically pack before every tropical trip.
Whether you’re heading to Fiji, Bali, Thailand, Hawaii, Mexico, or another beach destination, these are the things we’d never want to travel without again.
